Choosing the right size for your pet portrait can take a bit of thought. There are a few important aspects to consider from a practical point of view, and to ensure your artwork captures the best of your pet.
Wall Space – Whether your portrait is for yourself or a gift, try to picture where it will hang. Large portraits are more suited to bigger spaces like living rooms, while smaller portraits fit better in smaller areas like hallways or bedrooms.
Wow Factor – If you want a portrait that lights up the room and becomes a stunning centerpiece, a larger size is ideal. The bigger the drawing, the more detail I can add, making it highly photo-realistic. This can be especially meaningful if you’re gifting the artwork to a close family member or friend.
How Big is Your Pet? – It’s worth considering your pet’s physical size when choosing your portrait size. If you have a large pet like a Labrador, my largest size would allow for a life-size drawing with intricate detail that really brings your portrait to life. On the other hand, if you have a smaller pet like a Terrier or cat, you might opt for a smaller portrait to match their size.
Full Body Portraits – A big part of your pet’s personality is shown through their face, especially their eyes. If you choose a full-body portrait, keep in mind that the head will be smaller compared to a head-and-shoulder portrait of the same size. You may want to go for a slightly larger size to enhance the details.
More than One Pet – If you want more than one pet in the portrait, larger sizes allow for more detail in each pet. Some smaller sizes aren’t available for multiple pets, as they don’t allow me to achieve the level of detail and realism I aim for.
Framing – All the sizes listed below are unframed. When framed, the frame and mount will usually add about 5-10cm around the edges, depending on the mount and frame you choose. For more framing details, please read my framing guide.
